Introduction to Drugs and Behavior

                                      Group Report/Presentation (Fall 08)

 

The following information is designed to guide you in the preparation of the group research/presentation.  Each group will be assigned a drug to research.  The research has two parts.

 

First, a written report, which thoroughly covers available research from each of the categories listed below, must be presented to the instructor a minimum of one week prior to the scheduled presentation.  The written submission must be in bullet format and typed or done on a word processor. The report must use a minimum of four sources in addition to the course text. 

 

Note:  The written report is a summary of the research, and is not a reproduction of the power point text.

 

Second, each group is required to give a power point presentation based on the written report.  Directions and discussion covering the development of a power point presentation will be addressed in class.  The presentation must include time for questions from the class.

 

Due dates for power point presentations will be provided in class.

 

The written report and class power point presentation should include the

following information:

 

Background:  Name of drug, source of drug, history of use, current demographics regarding use

 

Pharmacokinetics:  Administration, absorption, distribution, metabolism (include half-life and excretion

 

Mechanism of Action:  Specifically in the central nervous system

 

Psychological & Behavioral Effects

 

Physiological Effects:  Neurotoxicity, metabolic impact, cardiovascular, respiratory problems etc

 

Tolerance:  Does tolerance develop?  Type(s) of tolerance.

 

Dependence:  Does the drug typically cause physical and/or psychological dependence?

 

Withdrawal Symptoms:  When administration stops does withdrawal syndrome occur?

                                        Describe the symptoms 

 

Sources of information:  Sources of information used. (Title of the publication, author, publication date etc.)
