Developing and Understanding Your Identity

This journal assignment has to do with examining your sense of identity, how it came to be, and your expectations for the future. In class we will discuss Erikson's ideas of identity development in adolescence and Marcia's theory of how identity development progresses, etc. Please consider the following issues (as well as any others you think are relevant).

· When you were an adolescent, what were your parent's hopes for your eventual adult identity?

· What individuals and groups had the most effect on your sense of identity and self?

· Use Marcia's identity statuses to examine your identity development in adolescence and early adulthood.

· Since our identity is not fixed in adolescence, examine your continued identity development or changes over your lifespan.

· What changes to your identity to you anticipate as you continue through your lifespan?

· Reflect on what you have learned and thought about while completing this journal assignment.
