What is likely for next Monday, January 31st:
· Read Sonnet 19;
· Read Act III of Othello;
· Three written (and preferably typed) responses:
1. Copy down some language from Othello or from a sonnet that you find magnificent, and briefly explain (100 words or so) what this quote does to you;
2. Make some observation or insight into Othello. Write on any topic or character or theme you want; just be sure to anchor your observations in the language. (300 words or so should do it). Here are some suggestions:
a. Compare Iago to Richard III;
b. Study Othello’s changes in language from Act I to Act III;
c. What devices is Iago using to bring down Othello?
d. Compare the two stooges: Roderigo to Buckingham;
e. Compare a woman in Richard III to one in Othello.
f. What do Shakespeare’s characters say about conscience?
g. How does Shakespeare treat the theme of appearance vs. reality?
3. Now give your blood a chance to write. For 100 words or so, what are you feeling about these plays, these characters, this writer? Get your brain out of the way and let your pulse and hips and back of your neck express themselves.
