Friday, April 15th:
1. Chapter 10 Quizlet
2. Brief response to previous week’s movies.
3. Essay on cultures is due. You will turn this in with your portfolio that will include previous essays, plus a new transcript and boo/boo page from essay #2. Be sure to include your cassette tape, and be sure to cue it up to fresh tape.
This essay will focus on two things:1) what these movies have taught you about different cultures, and 2) what they have taught you about the different ways of making movies.
For the first part, I suggest that each of your paragraphs tackle one idea, like food. Think of all the different types of food we saw in the movies from all these different cultures. Another paragraph could be on rituals. Another on landscape. And so on…
The same with the second part. Have a paragraph on sound tracks, another on cinematography, and so on.
Also—and this can be part of the essay or a separate note—I really want to know what this culture stuff is doing to you on a personal level.
Note: This essay will likely be longer than usual, perhaps from 5-7 pages. The trick is to have lots of examples from multiple movies, and to have your brain at work making observations and insights. (Point range: 150-200pts)
Friday, April 22nd:
1. Brief response to previous week’s movies.
2. Mega-Book test: 50-100 multiple-choice questions. (I’ll take 5-10 questions from each chapter.) (Point range: 140-200 points) Everyone must take this test.
Friday, April 29th:
1. Student movies (and I must) have a copy for myself (point range: 100-200) (And a note about these movies: I will likely show some of them over the summer at the outdoor film fest);
2. Write a final “Dear Jimbo” letter that lets me know how the whole course went for you. Put more thought and time and ink into this one. I’m not having you write a final paper, so this is it. Let me know what worked and what didn’t work, what I should keep for next semester and what I should change. Also, write about you: how did this course (and these movies) change you or soften you or enlarge you. (Point range: 50-100)
