What to do for Tuesday, February 15th:

1.      Today I will return your character paper and your cassette. This is your golden  opportunity to learn a lot of things, so to help you, do these two things:

a.       Write a transcript of the tape (my comments on the left side; your responses on the right side) followed by a brief free-write about the whole process and what you’ve learned.

b.      A boo-boo page: for each of your errors, write the rule and a few correct sentences.

c. A rewrite of the character paper.

Note: My expectation is that you will work hard to master all your boo-boos, that you will review all past boo-boos (and review my taped comments) from earlier papers, and that these boo-boos won’t recur.

2.      Profile paper: Write a typed draft of your profile and three copies for your group. (You’ll distribute these and read them over the next couple of days.) This profile aims to show your profile person and yourself through all kinds of details: appearance, possessions, actions, and especially words. In order to practice some of the things we are learning in class, I want this paper to include…

a.       at least one simile;

b.      a colon;

c.       a semi-colon;

d.      a sentence that gets extended with an –ing verb;

e.       a sentence that gets extended with a noun –ing;

f.        a sentence that includes a dash.

            And be sure to…

            … include dialogue that is correctly punctuated;

… use your senses; be vivid and concrete and specific. (Ask yourself: Could a director or painter produce these people and scenes based on your writing?)

…write with energy and wit and creativity and humor. Make it a performance. Make it impossible for me to put your paper down.

3.      Magazine: Work on your contributions for your group magazine. Your contribution includes these things:

a.       Some kind of advertisement;

b.      Some kind of feature or article often found in magazines (e.g., a horoscope page, a cover, a letter to the editor,…);

c.       Your profile paper formatted in a magazine style, like in columns and perhaps with a photo or graphic.
