Day 3 units Ceramics Weekly Lecture/Lab Schedule

 

Aug. 25-27                1. Introduction to course        1.  Demonstrate pinch pots and coil pots.         

                                    2.  Suggestion:  Texture pot.   Put name, not initials on bottom.

                       

Sept. 3                        1. Subtractive and additive design, carve one of your pots.

                                    2. Slab roller demo. 3.  Demonstrate soap dish, simple plate.

                                   

Sept. 8-10                  1. Library visit:  Get library card, check out ceramic book or magazine.

                                    2. Visit display cases         3. Load bisque kiln.

 

Sept. 15-17                1. Assignment #1 due: 15 points. Three things you learned.

                                        Show me your library card; display case review.

                                    2. Demo. extruded forms.     3.  Students create extruded forms.    

 

Sept. 22-24                1.  First Journal and work review.  25 points

                                    2.  Demonstrate wedging and throwing cylinders on the wheel

 

Sept. 29-                    1.  Slides of glaze examples     2. Oct. 1 Glaze lecture  MANDATORY!

Oct. 1                          3.  Demonstrate glazing. Students glaze work.

                                   

Oct. 6-8                      1.  Students begin to throw  on the wheel.  2.  Demo. throwing cups.

                                    3.  Demo. creating and attaching handles; texture and repetition.

                                    4.  Carving assignment #2 due, 10 points

 

Oct. 13-15                  1.  Slides of ceramic work.                        2.  Load high fire kiln

                                    3.  Demonstrate bowls on the wheel      4.  Students throw and glaze.                 

Oct. 20-22                  1. Whole class critique assignment #3: Present your work. 10 points

                                    2.  Continue work on projects.   3.  Wheel demo.:  Lips and lids

                                   

Oct. 27-29                  1.   Second review of Journal and glazed work.  25 points

                                    2.  Demonstrate throwing tall forms  3.  Students throw tall forms.

 

Nov. 3-5                    1.  Hand built sculptural pieces, newspaper center

                                    2.  Special individualized assignment #4, 10 points

 

Nov. 12                      1.  Demo. raku glazing, firing.    2.  Demo. low relief tile work 

                                    3.  Assignment #5 Term project due, 25 points (40 for museum)

 

Nov. 17-19                 1.  Third review of Journal and completed work, 25 points

                                   2.  Continue creating new work, complete suggested projects.       

                       

Nov. 24-26                 1.  Students finish all greenware for last bisque.   

                                    2.  Load final bisque kiln.          

           

Dec. 1-3                     1.  Final days to glaze high fire         2.  Load final glaze kiln.

                                     3.  Fourth review of Journal and work.  25 points

 

Dec. 10                      Final critique, clean room and lockers.   10 points

Day Final, 11-1       Night Final, 6:00 pm.
