Office phone: 588-5341 (call any hour, leave message) sylwesterl@yosemite.edu
Extremely Cool Details:
You will get your first bag of clay for
free. Recycle clay is always free.
We have classroom tools to share. No need to
buy tools; if you do, mark them.
You may check out ceramic magazines and books
from the back of the classroom
on the
honor system. Fill out card, return
magazines in one week.
You may use coffee pot & microwave at back of class, don’t eat or
drink when glazing.
You may
make up hours Mon. 9-5, Wed. 9-9 or Fri. 9-12, space permitting. Ask permission of the professor that is
teaching at that time. Work quietly
in the back of the room if other classes are in session. OPEN LAB is for independent work time; if you need individual help, schedule
time with the instructor. Any time you
are here that is not your regular class time, CHECK IN ON THE COMPUTER, and
CHECK OUT ON THE COMPUTER when you leave.
During class and when you are logged on the computer, you are insured as
a student. You will need to know your student number.
Lectures and Demonstrations:
The
lecture begins at the start of class, so be on time. During lectures and
demonstrations, take a break from your work, respectfully listen and
participate. You are encouraged to try
everything. Before bisque firing take a
good critical look at your work. If some
of the pieces are marginal, recycle them.
Concentrate on completing quality works.
Regularly check the reject shelves for work.[1]
Policies:
If you need
accommodations for a handicap, let me know today.
Turn
off electronics and no cell phone calls during class hours.
Do
not bring children or guests to class, EVER.
You
may only work in this classroom with the instructor present.
The
closest smoking area is by the bookstore.
Do
not park and smoke out back. Willow and
parking area are no smoking areas.
Policies
continued:
Ceramics
is a cooperative class. In
addition to creating your assignments, you are expected to spend some time
helping out with classroom needs. If you
finish early, refer to the To Do list in your packet. You are expected to stay and help until the
end of class. If folks leave early, I
will take roll at the end of class.
Breaks: Breaks should not exceed a total of 10
minutes during a 3 hour class. Take them
as needed, but not during the lecture or demonstration.
“Hanging out” just for chitchat or
working on other non-ceramic homework is not considered as being present and
participating. This is an active learning
environment in which you will have the opportunity of getting to know other
classmates while partaking of ceramic related activities.
Roll
call will be taken every day. As
with a job, leave phone message or email if you will be late or absent.
Clean
up after yourself. Always leave the
classroom and the earth cleaner than you found them. Dry clay dust can be a hazard, sponge it
up. If you get clay on the floor, clean
it up. Wheels should be left
immaculate. Wash down counters and
wedging table after using them. Before
leaving, put away all utensils in dish rack.
Ceramic
work for your business may not be fired at Columbia College. If you sell your work for profit, it may not
be fired here. WE will not fire
multiple-produced products for sale. You
are welcome to take classes as offered and participate in all the regular
assignments. Your expertise and knowledge are highly valued in this learning
environment. Please offer to help
others as needed.
The work in this studio
should represent a collegiate best effort; no cookie-cutter type
repetitious work or cutsey stuff or paraphernalia. Work that falls outside of college standards
will be placed on the reject shelf.
The
majority of your work should be produced in the classroom. Your work should be thoughtful, carefully
executed and finished to the best of your ability. Trim all wheel thrown pots. Only touch the work of others while loading
and unloading kilns.
Only
fire Raku kiln with instructor approval and presence.
Don’t
bring in clay from outside sources. No
low fire clay. The wrong clay
can cause thousands of dollars in damages.
Classroom
tools need to be cleaned and returned each period, do not keep them in your
locker. If you find tools lying around,
put them away!
[1] Reject shelf is located outside. After two weeks, the work will be
recycled.
Here are some
reasons and solutions for rejected work:
1. Work is too wet,
let dry in classroom. 2. No
name - inscribe your name and place it on greenware shelf. 3.
Work is too thick, recycle it. 4. Broken or damaged work - fix or recycle
it.
5. Not college level work - recycle it. 6. Wheel thrown work - must be trimmed neatly.
