Spring, 2009
Dear Student:
Welcome to MATH 250, Personalized Mathematics Development. As the name indicates, in this course the mathematics you learn is the mathematics you need to know and are ready to learn. With the exception of a brief on-campus orientation, the class can be done completely online wherever and whenever you want. The computer program that you will be using to learn mathematics is called ALEKS; more information about ALEKS and MATH 250 is on the attached syllabus.
I do want to call your attention to a few important items:
1. There is no textbook, but you must purchase the software license at the Manzanita bookstore and attend an on-campus orientation/assessment. Orientations during the first week of classes are held as indicated in the Class Schedule. Bookstore hours are 7:30 am to 6:30 pm Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 am - 3 pm on Friday. If you cannot get to campus during these hours, contact me to arrange another time. Individual orientations may be held by appointment in the Math Lab (Juniper 5)
2. The grading is pass/no pass only, and is based upon the number of hours you spend working on the system and progress toward your individual goals. The minimum number of hours required to earn credit is shown in the syllabus. You may work as many hours as you wish, but must meet the minimum if you wish credit.
3. In order to succeed, it is important to get started early in the semester. If you have not completed the orientation or contacted me to make other arrangements by the end of the 2nd week of the semester (January 23), you will be considered a “no-show” and dropped from the class.
If you have any questions at all, please contact me at 588-5164 or leamyj@yosemite.edu.
