ALEKS SYLLABUS

ALEKS is an online system for the assessment and individualized teaching of mathematics.  It allows students to assess, review and learn, at their own pace, various different levels of math skills.  It is a variable unit course, meaning that a student can sign up for .5 units, 1 unit, 1.5 units or 2 units of credit.  In order to earn this credit, the student must put in a certain amount of time per semester for the specified number of units and also master at least 70% of the material presented.  ALEKS is an open entry course, which means it can be started at various different times of the semester.  However, the course must be completed by the end of finals week for whichever semester the student is enrolled in.  In order to enroll in ALEKS, a student must do three things:

1.      Choose the amount of units they would like to earn, based on the time commitment below and the length of subscription they would like to purchase, and enroll in that course through Admissions and Records.

2.      Purchase, through the Manzanita Bookstore, a subscription that gives them access, through the Internet, to ALEKS.  These subscriptions come in 6 week ($31.75), 11 week ($54.75) and 20 week ($96.75) time intervals.   Prices shown are current, but subject to change.

3.      Attend an orientation, with their paid subscription in hand, preferably within the first week after enrollment in the course.    Orientations during the first week of class are shown in the Class Schedule.   After the first week, they are available by appointment in the Math Lab (Juniper 5).

Although the subscription times do not coincide with the length of our semester, students must have their time completed by the end of finals week or by the end of their subscription, whichever comes first.  Students must make an appointment in Juniper 5, The Math Center, for their orientation.  They must bring to the orientation their purchased subscription.  The orientation usually takes from an hour and a half to two hours to complete.  It consists of: a short movie on how ALEKS is designed and an overview of its operation, logging onto ALEKS and enrolling in the appropriate starting place (Basic Math, Beginning Algebra, etc.), working through a tutorial on how to enter answers into the computer, the initial assessment of the student, an analysis of the student’s assessment and getting started in the learning mode of ALEKS.

Some of the courses offered through ALEKS are: Basic Math, Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Introduction to Statistics, Math Prep for Accounting, Foundations of Business Math, and Math Prep for College Physics.
