Course Description (53A – Beginning)

Basic techniques with emphasis on offensive and defensive tactics of team play. Rules and intra-class competition included.

 

Course Objectives

A.  GOAL: Each student should be able to understand the rules of volleyball.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to:

            1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of volleyball rules.

 

B.  GOAL: Each student should be able to perform the basic skills needed to play volleyball.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to demonstrate basic ability in:

            1. Serving.

            2. Passing.

            3. Setting.

            4. Spiking.

            5. Blocking.

 

C.  GOAL: Each student should be able to understand basic team strategy.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of:

1. Team offensive strategies

            a. W-receiving formation.

            b. Free ball transition; defense to offense.

2. Team defensive strategies

            a. Three-deep defense.

            b. Free ball transition, offense to defense.

                                                                                                                                                                       

 

Course Description (53B – Intermediate)

An intermediate level of skills and strategies for the experienced player; an introduction to power volleyball play. 

 

Course Objectives

A. GOAL: Each student should be able to exhibit a fundamental understanding of the rules of volleyball.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to:

            1. Define the technical terms in the game of volleyball.

            2. Demonstrate knowledge of volleyball rules.

            3. Discriminate between appropriate and inappropriate game play by officiating a game.

 

B.  GOAL: Each student should be able to execute fundamental skills in a volleyball games.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to:

            1. Execute the basic skills of serving, passing, setting, spiking, blocking, and dunking.

 

C. GOAL: Each student should be able to comprehend and execute the basic team strategies for both offensive and defensive play.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, each student should be able to understand and execute:

            1. The W-receiving formation.

            2. Three-deep defense.

            3. Free ball transition.

            4. The four-deep defense.

            5. Transition from defense to offense.

            6. The four-two offense.

Lockers

Columbia College lockers are available for your use during the semester. A lock from the Manzanita Bookstore is recommended. The long lockers are to be used during class time only – store your belongings in the adjacent cubby during non-class time.

 

Recommended Attire and Etiquette

Proper attire is crucial for a safe and successful class.

·         T-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, and/or sweats are all acceptable (avoid clothing with zippers)

·         Tennis shoes to support your feet are mandatory – no black soles or high platforms.

·         Limit your jewelry – earrings, necklaces, watches, rings, and bracelets are potential hazards.

·         If you have long hair, please keep it tied back.

·         Place backpacks, jackets, etc. in a cubby or against the bleachers if you do not use a locker.

-         Activity: setting, downballs, hitting, and blocking; scrimmage
