Field trips

Identifying fungi is a skill that improves only through practice.  Many of you have enrolled in this course to learn or improve fungus identification skills.  For that reason, we will spend alot of time in the field finding and identifying fungi.  Students must provide their own transportation to field meeting sites.  Please car pool - field sites have extremely limited parking.

You should keep a field notebook. This is an anootated list of the fungi that you have found or identified. This should be kept in its own dedicated field notebook and should contain the following information for each fungus you identify:

1.       fungus name or number (e.g. "unknown #1)

2.     date observed

3.     location, habitat, conditions

4.     Description of observed specimen such as: fruiting body type, shape, size, color.  A drawing or sketch may be helpfull in remembering, or better yeat a picture.

Materials recommended for field trips (bring these with you and ready to go)

• Field guide(s)

• Field notebook

• Collecting basket

• Tools (hand lens, ruler)

• Pocket knife (with at least one sharp blade)

Suggested items:

• Day pack
