COURSE SYLLABUS

COURSE GOALS:

I intend for this class to acquaint you with musicians and music from the ancient Greeks to the mid 1700s.  This will include Palestrina, Vivaldi, Handel and Bach and many others.

I hope that by the time you have finished this course you will be able to listen perceptively to Classical music and be able to describe what you hear using musical terms so that you can have e a lifetime of great listening and a much better appreciation of the times when this music was written.

how to succeed in this class

  • Go to bed early enough the night before so you won’t be tired
  • Come to class, with your materials (i.e. books/notes)
  • Come to class with readings, writings, and other assignments finished.  Assignments should be prepared adequately for you to contribute actively to the class.
  • Plan your time so you can do the nightly homework.
  • DO the homework!!
  • Plan outside concert dates ahead of time
  • Start listening to the music list right away
