Technical exercises appropriate to the level and needs of each student will be drawn from standard scales, arpeggio, chord patterns as outlined in the Liszt Technical Exercises (Alfred), Czerny op. 299 and op. 740, and other similar materials.

Pre-baroque:           One work written before ca 1650 (by Bull, Byrd, Frescobaldi, etc.)

Baroque:

        A.    J. S. Bach  Three Preludes and Fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier, 

                One French Suite

                One additional work (Italian Concerto, organ transcriptions, etc.)

        B.    Scarlatti, Soler      Two works (sonatas, suite, or chaconne) Handel, etc.

Classical:

        A.    Mozart       One sonata

        B.    Haydn       One sonata

        C.    Beethoven            Two sonatas

Romantic:

        A.    Chopin:     Two Nocturnes, two Preludes, two Waltzes, two Etudes, one Mazurka, one larger work

                (Ballade, Polonaise, Scherzo, etc.)

        B.    Schumann            One work (Fantasiestücke, op. 12, Arabesque, op. 18, etc.)

        C.    Schubert    Two works (Impromptus, op. 90 or 142, Moments Musicaux, op. 94, etc.)

        D.    Brahms      Two works (Pieces from op. 76, 116, 117, 118, 119, or Rhapsodies op.79,etc.)

        E.    Liszt           One work (Consolation, Liebesträume, transcription, etc.)

Twentieth-century:

        A.    Debussy     One work (Preludes, Children's Corner, etc.)

        B.    Ravel         One work (Sonatine, Menuet antique, etc.)

        C.    Prokofiev  One work (from Visions Fugitives, Ten Pieces, op. 12, etc.)

        D.    Two other works, including one by an American (Gershwin, Copland, Barber, etc.) and one written

                since 1970 (Dello Joio Diversions, Muczynski Maverick Pieces, Diemer Toccata, etc.)

Concertos:

        A.    One by Mozart or Beethoven

        B.    One by a Romantic or Modern composer

 

 

Students will also be required, each semester, to perform at a mid semester performance, end of semester performance, and Music Juries the last week of the semester.
