Our Mission
Our mission is to provide life and property fire protection on the college campus and adjoining areas within Tuolumne County. The department also supports the Fire Technology, Emergency Medical Services and Search and Rescue Programs and provides career preparation and guidance to students.
Organizational Structure
Our department is modeled after that of many professional fire departments. The station is staffed 24 hours a day-seven days a week by college management, a Cal Fire officer, and student employee firefighters.
Station operations are managed by a Cal Fire/TCFD Battalion Chief. He supervises up to eighteen personnel on three shifts. |
The facility, budget, and work experience program are managed by a member of the Columbia College management staff. |
Each shift consists of a crew leader, engineers, and firefighters. |
All line personnel receive stipends from the college as student workers. |

Stipend amounts vary, and depend upon rank. |

How to Apply for Membership
Please use the following procedure in order to apply for membership with the Columbia College Fire Department.
Emergency Response
The Columbia College Fire Department responds to emergency incidents on our campus and in a 56 square mile area of Tuolumne County. Our breathing support unit responds to all structure fires and hazardous materials incidents occurring in the county. We respond along with units from CDF/TCFD and local fire districts.
We respond to approximately 400 calls annually of which 70% of these are medical in nature. The remainder are fire, other emergencies, and non-emergency calls for assistance. The wide range of calls gives our firefighters hands-on experience that is extremely valuable as a growth experience and as preparation for careers in the fire service.
For more information, send e-mail to: Preston Birdwell, our fire station manager.
