Course description

Introductory course in understanding the meetings, incentives, conferences & event planning industries (M.I.C.E.) providing an overview of each field and the career opportunities that exist.

 

Required textbooks

Meetings, Expositions, Events & Conventions, George Fenich, PhD.(Pearson, Prentice Hall 2005)

APEX Office Ready for Meeting & Event Planning, templates of facility forms, Convention Industry Council, to be ordered online at http://www.conventionindustry.org/shop/ordermenu.htm.

A professional “portfolio” binder for presentation of your graded “Individual M.I.C.E. Plan Outline”

Transportation to visit the meeting venue for your final project presentation and for field trips

 

Helpful Skills/Related Subjects

Web surfing, simple word processing, simple desk top publishing, and public speaking. There are no course prerequisites except related skills.

 

Goals of this course – Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Recognize and differentiate the four key sectors within the M.I.C.E. industry today.
  2. Organize and execute a simple event.
  3. Understand and utilize the new industry-standard APEX software.
  4. Develop a formal “Planning Outline” for a M.I.C.E. related event (student choice)
  5. Identify trends within the industry.
  6. Understand career opportunities within the industry.

 

What is expected of each student?: Complete assigned reading and written exercises prior to each class.

  • On-time attendance is expected. Part of your grade is class participation and tardy arrivals and missed classes will account against your total grade.
  • If you will not be attending class (emergency or illness), please leave me a message (phone or e-mail).
  • If you miss more than two classes without prior approval, you will be dropped from the class.
