and Biochemistry
5 units Recommended for Success: CHEM. 20 Lecture: 4 hours Laboratory: 3 hours Fundamental principles of general, organic, and biochemistry. The general chemistry ideas covered include the composition of atoms and molecules, measurements and units, basic stoichiometry, physical properties of matter, gas laws, solution chemistry, acids bases and buffers, and nuclear chemistry. The organic chemistry portion will concentrate of the relevance of how functional groups influence solubility and chemical reactivity of biological molecules. The biochemistry portion concentrates on the structure and function of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins and an overview of their metabolism. Applications to pharmaceuticals, medicine, and medical testing are integrated throughout each topic. Oral and written projects as they relate to communicating chemical ideas are required.
