Summary of the Classified Senate Meeting on Sept. 28, 2007 prepared by Nancy Bull per Rose Hefley’s request.

In attendance were Rose Hefley, Greg Elam, Nancy Bull and Lonnie Blansit.

The meeting focused on discussions rather than action items.

Rose acquired a list of the college wide committees.  She will contact the committee chairs to determine the number of classified reps needed and who is currently filling the openings.  We talked about communicating more and better with the classified staff that serve on these committees so they can take our input to the meetings and we can hear back from them after the meetings to learn what took place.  We also discussed that some of the committees really overlap but don’t talk/work with each other and the need to correct that.

The Classified Senate has been given the task to develop a Classified Hiring Prioritization that will become part of the EMP.  Joan Smith gave Rose the names of some colleges to contact.  Lonnie brought up that he’s heard discussions among faculty regarding the need for a classified person in their areas but they don’t know how to do that.  We also discussed the need to be sensitive to the CSEA/Classified Senate issue in that Classified Senate can’t be involved in anything that’s contractual.

Rose told us officially that Joan Smith will be hosting a Classified Staff Breakfast on the last Friday of October from 8:00 – 9:30 am.  Joan will make sure the other administrators, managers and directors know that the classified staff will be attending this breakfast.

We also discussed the need to fill the current vacancies on the Exec. Board.  Rose will ask for volunteers to fill the vacancies.  Joan Smith is anxious for the Classified Senate to become active again as it’s her desire to have the Classified Staff have an active part in the graduation ceremonies.

Finally, all Classified Staff are encouraged to attend meetings even if they have to come late or leave early.  If attendance is not possible, e-mail or call Rose with your ideas, suggestions, concerns, etc. so she can bring them up during the meeting.
