ACTION ITEMS

1.    Liberal Studies: Title V requires us to change our Liberal Studies Major. Presented are 4 Liberal Studies Majors. We have received communication from the state that they will most likely be accepted as currently written after a sentence is added to each one that delineates what the major is at the top of the form. They are being brought forward for approval from the committee. Joe recommended that all committee members start discussing the majors with faculty and each other. He reminded everyone that a transfer degree is prep for a Bachelor degree. The four Liberal Studies Majors listed below are created with courses that are almost identical to the one currently in the catalog.

A.Liberal Studies: Emphasis in Elementary Teaching Preparation:

Committee would like another sentence stating, “In partial preparation for”, or verbiage similar in nature. John Jeff and Anne are to check for the proper verbiage to use.

ACTION:              Accept Liberal Studies: Emphasis in Elementary Teaching Preparation –

APPROVED with corrections

                                M/S/P (Leamy/Fitzwater/Unanimous)

B.Liberal Studies: Emphasis in Behavioral and Social Sciences

Some Committee members have a problem with 3 separate Liberal Studies Majors. The Social Sciences major allows the student to receive a degree from the college in this area. Social Studies students do not usually have 18 lower level units.

Jeff called for the motion to accept as is.

ACTION:              Accept Emphasis in Behavioral and Social Sciences –

APPROVED with corrections

                                M/S/P (Leamy/Fitzwater/5 Ayes, 1 Nay & 1 Abstention)

C.Liberal Studies: Emphasis in Arts and Humanities

The Committee would like for this major to be broke into sections. SPCOM 40A, 40B &40C need to be changed to SIGN. SPCOM 50A & 50B need to be deleted. Spanish courses need to be listed.

ACTION:              Accept Liberal Studies: Emphasis in Arts and Humanities –

FAILED as is. Committee members can meet with Joe on 3/7/08 to break the major into two parts and make changes as needed. Bring back to the 3/12/08 meeting

                                M/S/P (Leamy/Mallory/3 Ayes & 4 Nays)

D.Liberal Studies: Liberal Studies: Emphasis in Natural Sciences and Mathematics

The Committee would like the title changed to “Physical and Natural Science”. Math to be deleted from major. Programming to be listed as 5,22,24,28 & 15. CMPSC 9 added. Elizondo/Cavagnaro called for the motion to Table until the courses in the major are divided with CMPSC listed under physical science, and changes listed above completed. Discussion ensued as to whether it would be better to pass the majors as is now in order to meet the catalog deadline, then, properly configure them later in the year. Committee needs to remember that students have 4 year catalog rights. Breaking the courses into sections may be the best way to go.

ACTION:              Accept Liberal Studies: Emphasis in Arts and Humanities –
