DISCUSSION ITEMS

Course Outline Form Revisions

The Course Outline form has one new revision in the information area between V and VI:  “The following information (Sections VI to X) includes representative examples of effective practices.” The modified Course Outline Form with be presented to the Academic Senate this week for review and possible vote.

Curriculum Review Non-Compliance

There was considerable discussion regarding how to deal with the non-compliance of faculty regarding curriculum review. Tim Elizondo asked what kind of consequences the college could face by having out of compliance curriculum. Joe and Jean pointed out that the college could be negatively affected by apportionment and accreditation. Tim stressed again that it is important for the curriculum committee to hear from the administration of Columbia College why they are authorizing courses that are outdated and not in compliance, and would like a solution to this situation. Joe would like to see a timeline created for procedures on how to proceed with out of compliance courses. Then inform the instructor that a course will be discontinued one semester later if it is not reviewed and brought up-to-date; especially with courses that have not been reviewed in 5 years or more.

Creating a New Department

Jean asked the committee how ASL 40A-40B could have its own department and not be listed under SPCOM. Joe will find out if the Curriculum Committee can start or change a department or if that is done at a different level. Tim expressed his interest in this issue and would like to look into the process of changing SPCOM to COM.

Discontinuing a Course by Articulation Officer

Jean asked how an Articulation Officer would have a course discontinued if there is not a full time faculty in the area. Joe informed Jean that she should continue to use the course discontinuance procedures, but bypass the full time faculty portion. If there is a disagreement, bring both sides to the curriculum committee for a solution and/or decision.
